New Pope on the Block

Fellow chemists may find this interesting. First, it seems Pope Francis has a master’s degree in chemistry. Very cool! Second, how do they get the black smoke so black and the white smoke so white in the Sistine Chapel chimney smoke signals? For black, they use a mixture is potassium perchlorate, anthracene and sulfur. For white, potassium chlorate, lactose and a pine resin. Very exothermic! This fellow looks like a keeper.

Easy come, easy go I guess....Not so easy filling his shoes though, I saw the black smoke coming out of the Sistine Chapel so I guess they are still in deliberations.

Farewell party? Hmmm....maybe something with loaves and fishes and water that gets turned into wine.

I think there's a South American Pope, Francis, I think. I'm not sure, yet. Just heard it though the grapevine.

Hah! It doesn't seem fair that he didn't even get a watch or something...

The new Pope is a true humanitarian. He's been an advocate for the poor since he started as a priest. It'll be interesting to see how this will play out for the future of the Catholic Church.

God, I am a Philistine.

I thought your title was 'Quick Paypal sendoff'.

Plesae, I beg you man, don't tell my Mom. As the sole lapsed Catholic in the family, I'm already in enough trouble!

|Someone once gave me a book called How to be Pope. It was semi funny, a kind of job manual for the work of the Pope. It was really interesting but it didn't include anything about a farewell party! :)

I was impressed with the title, with him being "the Pope that rode the bus". He sounds like a humble man that cares for the unfortunate.

I wish they'd pick somebody younger but I think that he seems a good enough chap.
Not that it bothers me too much.

I'm always intriqued by that smoke thing, too.

As a long lapsed Catholic I should take more interest in events like these.

Instead, I'm perfecting the art of shrinking my personal universe. It's going to be down to about 8 people soon...and one of those is iffy.

ha!

Thanks for linking.

Your writing style if so fabulous that I my increase my universe to 9!
